What Is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved treatment used to temporarily smooth and reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face. Botox injections freeze muscles by preventing nerve signals from reaching them.

What Is Botox Made Of?

The bacterium Clostridium botulinum creates Botulinum toxin. Botox uses onabotulinumtoxinA, a preparation of Botulinum toxin.

What Wrinkles Are Botox Used On?

Botox is FDA approved for the use of moderate to severe:

  • forehead lines
  • frown lines (between the eyebrows)
  • crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes’ corners)

Botox may also benefit marionette lines (around the mouth corners).

Is Botox For Me?

Dr. Cabrera will discuss with you if Botox is right for you. Those who may be less-than-ideal candidates include people who have nerve conditions like myasthenia gravis or are pregnant.

Additionally, Botox may be less-than-ideal for patients with gravity or sunlight-caused wrinkles.

Your Botox Procedure

Dr. Cabrera will discuss with you on how to prepare for Botox your Botox treatment. Doing so may include ceasing certain medications (like aspirin) two weeks before your appointment.

Your Botox injection procedure at Genesis Health Institute may take 10-30 minutes. You will not require anesthesia, though you may feel a pinch with each injection. You can expect 3-5 injections per facial area.

What Can I Expect After My Appointment?

You can return to your daily activities after leaving the office. Avoid rubbing the treated areas for a day afterward; doing so may spread the Botox.

Dr. Cabrera will discuss any aftercare in detail. For example, you may need to avoid exercising for a day.

Effects vary for each patient. You may see the effects of the Botox injections within a week, likely within two days. The effects may last three months or higher. You will require follow-up injections to maintain the effects.

Are There Side Effects to Botox?

You may experience mild swelling at the injection site. Dr. Cabrera will tell you of any other side effects to be aware of, including drooling, drooping eyelids, and headaches.
